Podcast- Using Free Sound Recorder

Posted on October 2, 2008 by oetsaustin.

Whilst podcasts have been covered by others in their posts I am just going to promote Free Sound Recorder

Direct from their website:

Free Sound Recorder does exactly as it sounds — it is an easy-to-use FREE software program that lets you record any sounds from your sound card and save the recording directly into MP3, WMA or WAV files.

Free Sound Recorder is a perfect audio recorder to record your own voice, music or any other sound by working directly with your sound card. It supports the record input/source from a microphone, streaming audio from the Internet, external input devices (e.g. CDs, LP, music cassettes, phone line etc.) as well as other applications like Winamp, Media Player, etc. With built-in advanced audio record engine, the recorder produces high quality recordings.

If you’re looking for an application to help you for audio recording, you won’t be disappointed in Free Sound Recorder!

Vodcast- Using Jing

Vodcasting.

Video podcast sometimes shortened to vodcast is the delivery of on-demand video content. Vodcasting is similar to Podcasting except instead of audio on demand its video content on demand.

Vodcasts can be viewed on your computer using standard software such as Windows MediaPlayer and Apple Quicktime.

Due to the amount of data that needs to be transmitted for Vodcasting it is recommend that you use a broadband Internet connection.

A Vodcast can be sent or uploaded as a file or can be streamed. An advantage of downloading a complete vodcasts in advance gives the user the ability to play the entire clip offline and as many times as you like with only the one download.

However streaming allows skipping portions of the file without downloading the full video podcast,  however, users may have to face pauses in playback and ‘buffering’.

For my Vodcast I used Jing

Whilst fairly easy to use it does have a few areas for improvement. The website provides a number of tutorials and advice which helps

Using Jing

Once downloaded you will see a ‘sun like’ image at the top of your screen  It is always ready to capture and just requires you move your mouse over sun when three ‘rays’ will appear. The first ray is for the capture (either still or video). The second ray is your history and you will see your saved screencasts. The third ray is the more for settings, maintenance and problem solving

Taking your first capture:

  1. Click Capture
  2. You are now prompted to select the screen size by dragging the cross hairs
  3. Select either capture an image or video. You can add arrows, text and highlights to images.
  4. If you have a microphone, you can narrate however you are limited to 5 minutes After completing the screen capture you then choose what you want to do with it. Firstly you will be prompted to name the file. At this point there are a number of choices
    • Share to Screencast.com which will provide a URL you can paste into your blog etc.
    • Save the file to your computer. Or,
    • Copy it to your clipboard (You can paste images only into emails and documents.)

So basically that is all you need to do.

To upload it into your blog you create a post and paste the URL from screencast.com. When the user clicks the link they will be automatically taken to the Screencast you made and just hit the triangular play button.

A couple of issues I had were the slowness of the capture – you seemed to be working at half the speed of a normal movement on the screen and the small amount of capture time.

The Educause website has been around for a while and offers information, tips and advice for educators. One of the pages that enjoy is the 7 Things you should know series. It offers valuable and succinct information which may well help us in developing our technology portfolio.

Graphic Organisers

Free mind is an open source (free) downloadable mindmapping software. At school I use Kidspiration/Inspiration as a rule but have also use freemind. Children are able to use mindmapping techniques or graphic organisers to enhance their learning and also provide an alternative to writing a lot of information.

Bit Strip

Another easy to use and creative website is Bit Strip. As the name implies it is a cartoon creatorwhich allows students to create a character, a conversation and a background to produce a cartoon for all to see or read. Again I used this with great success in a Year 3/4 and 5/6 classroom. Even the reluctant writers were happy to create a bitstrip cartoon.
